Ready For Exit: Why Jared's New Book Wants Owners to Start the Exit Conversation Earlier
Every so often, a moment comes along that reflects everything a team believes in. This week was one of them at Capstone M&A. Jared launched his book, Ready For Exit, and on Wednesday he took the stage at the EPI Meeting to introduce the methodology behind it to a room of advisors.

Congratulations, Jared. Here is a look at what the week meant, and why it matters for business owners.
The Book: Putting a Methodology on the Page

Ready For Exit gives owners and the advisors who serve them a practical way to answer a question that too often goes unasked: is this owner actually ready to transition their business? The book pairs the Ready For Exit methodology with an assessment model, turning a fuzzy conversation about “someday” into something structured and measurable.
That matters because most owners think about price long before they think about readiness. A business can be profitable and still not be prepared for the market, and an owner can be successful and still not be prepared for what comes after the sale. Ready For Exit brings both sides into focus.
The Talk: Evaluating Market Readiness with Ready for Exit
On Wednesday, Jared presented “Ready For Exit: Evaluating Market Readiness & Preparing Owners for Transition” at the EPI Meeting. His session introduced a practical, data-driven approach to assessing an owner’s preparedness and gave attendees the foundational concepts behind the methodology. Advisors learned how to:
Understand the core components of market readiness and how each one influences exit outcomes.
Apply a structured assessment to evaluate how prepared an owner really is.
Start exit planning conversations earlier, before a life event or a market shift forces the issue.
The last point may be the most important. The best exit outcomes rarely come from a rushed timeline. They come from owners who identified their readiness gaps years ahead and had time to close them.
What the Room Told Us
Jared shared a slide called “Why Businesses Don’t Sell,” which lists twelve common obstacles, from Owner Dependence and Weak Financial Reporting to Customer Concentration, Leadership Gaps, and Emotional Unreadiness. The point of the slide was simple: each item is a measurable variable. If you can name it, you can measure it, and if you can measure it, you can improve it.
Then he put a question to the room: which of these do you see most often? With eleven tables of advisors weighing in, the answer was lopsided. Nine of the eleven tables, about 82 percent, chose #1, Owner Dependence. The runner-up was #8, Leadership Gaps.
Those two answers are closely related. When a business depends on its owner, it is usually because no leadership team has been built to take on decisions, customer relationships, and day-to-day operations. Advisors who work with owners every day see the same pattern, and it is the reason a buyer’s first question is so often “what happens when you step away?” The good news is that both are fixable when there is time, which is exactly why Ready For Exit encourages starting the conversation early.
Why Earlier Conversations Change Outcomes
Readiness gaps are much cheaper to fix when there is time. Building a management team that can run without the owner, documenting processes, reducing customer concentration, and clarifying personal and financial goals all take months or years, not weeks. A structured assessment gives advisors and owners a shared starting point and a clear list of what to work on first.
It also makes the work more approachable. Talking about an exit can feel heavy for an owner who has spent decades building a company. A data-driven framework lowers the temperature and replaces “are you ready?” with “here is where you stand, and here is what we can do about it.”
A few questions every owner can ask themselves today:
✔️ If I decided to sell in the next 12 months, what would a buyer find that I would wish I had fixed sooner?
✔️ Could my business run well without me for 90 days?
✔️ Do I know what I want my life to look like after the transition?
A Milestone for the Whole Capstone Team
At Capstone, our belief is simple: the same things that make a business ready for sale also make it a stronger, more valuable business to run today. Ready For Exit puts that belief into
a framework owners and advisors can use, and we are proud to see Jared share it with the broader advisory community.
Congratulations again, Jared, on a book launch and a presentation that will help more owners start the conversation early. If you are curious where your business stands, the Capstone team would be glad to talk.
